Apologies for the lack of a real newsletter last month. Hello again to those who came to see us at the Craft and Quilt Fair in Melbourne. Welcome to those who have recently joined the mailing list.
It has been a bit of a juggling act the last month or but things are settling down again. I am getting some more sewing done and have a couple of really interesting projects almost finished. I am a self confessed topper but I actually finished quilting my first quilt on my domestic machine. I feel like I really achieved something. Up to now I have been quilting on a domestic long arm on a quilting frame but I have never been truly happy with it. I also have not summoned up the courage to quilt on my domestic machine. The basting process beats me. I quilted Merryn’s Roses quilt and whilst the leaves along the border are not perfect each one is better than the last. I can tell where I started as they got bigger the further I went around!
I have been extending my IT skills. I have found some changes that I will be making to the Facebook Page. This should allow me to post some more information and information for you all to view. Don’t forget that you can view this page without having to have a Facebook account. I manage the website etc myself. Sometimes it’s a bit slow but I feel a real sense of achievement when it finally works.
I have ventured into the world of Twitter. I must say that it is a concept that I am not so sure about but then I have never one for broadcasting my every movement. I am still understanding how it all works but drop in for a look if you’re a Twitter user. Maybe you’ll have some tips for me.
New
We have some really nice textured fabrics this month. RJR Fabrics and Moda have presented us with some realistic leaves. The Autumn into Winter – Leaves would work well in a landscape style quilt or as a feature in a quilt. The colours are vibrant and the water beads look real enough that you expect them to roll off the fabric any moment. The Moda Scapes Wood Grain is also a great concept. I can imagine this one as a border in a blokey quilt. It would be a fantastic complement to a boat or fishing fabric. Perhaps you already have one in your stash that you’re waiting for the perfect mate for?
Floral Fantasy is the most recent quilt by Katie Friesen. We have been offering the Block of the Month Program for this beautiful quilt. Now we are able to print the Floral Fantasy Pattern books here in Australia and we have the first batch fresh from the printer. Katie offers 2 finishing options within the book and also gives instructions for trapunto and Italian Cording.
There are a couple more free quilt patterns appearing.
Coming Soon
I am working on an auction concept so that you can secure some really good bargains and I can move some of the older stock or one offs. I hope to have all of the intricacies worked out during this month. We might then run one trial to see if it works as I planned. Keep your eye out for the launch email.
I have a table setting under the sewing machine at the moment. It uses the Ribbeting fabric range from Wilmington Prints. It is very cute and will brighten up any table. The Facebook page and blog will show a preview in the next few days.
There is also a young boys playmat on the drawing board. Bryson loves cars so I made him one that we could take with us. Now the perfect fabric range has arrived for me to design an improved version.

The Rainbow Thread Club is a great idea for those who already have a fabric stash. Each month over the 12 months of the club you will receive 6 mini spools of thread in a particular colour theme. What ever your stash you will collect threads that match perfectly! Sign up with a friend and take advantage of the shipping saving (one shipping address)

I usually have lots of things prepared for your newsletters. This month has been busy on the personal front. Talking point
As much as I would like it to, my world is not slowing down. Merryn is walking now and turned one just this week. I have no idea where the last 12 months went. She is a curious girl and loves to watch the magpies scratching and singing in the garden. Bryson is growing in so many ways. He loves fishing, whether it’s in the pond or the middle of the loungeroom!
I’ve managed some sewing but the only thing I finished was Oliver’s Quilt. Oliver was born yesterday and I finished his quilt last night. There’s nothing like a deadline to get something finished. (Oliver’s Quilt is available in a kit set out below.) His nursery is a jungle theme so when the Jolly Jungle fabric arrived it was perfect! In a couple of days we’ll meet Oliver but he and his Mum need to rest up a bit first.
My quilting group celebrated its 21st birthday last month. What a milestone! We still have a founding member or two in the group. There was lots of catching up with quilters from across the state, stitching and eating cake.
New
The batiks have been listed. There are fat quarter packs and sampler packs as well as yardage.
The sampler packs contain 6.5” strips, perfect for creating blocks to show off the colour of the fabrics. Our patterns Bali Delight
and Star Bright these strips. We have also started a new fabric club for those who want to build up a collection of these beautiful fabrics.
Two Jungle quilts have hit the website. Jungle Crazy is a Bev Darby pattern. This single bed quilt is bright and cheery. Toucans, butterflies, leopards and other jungle creatures can be found amongst the crazy log cabins.
is available as a kit or pattern only. You will find this pattern a delight to use with scope for use with any feature fabric of your choosing.
Jolly Jungle is a cot quilt made for Oliver
. It features a central jungle panel border by prints from the same range. The jungle characters are bright and friendly and would make any child jolly.

We have reformatted our free patterns. You can now download them in .pdf format. The newest pattern is called Positive Negative Puzzle. Mum and I made a pair of these. One was white scrappy geese against scrappy blues and the other was scrappy blues against white. The both looked so different even though they had come from the same pattern.

The focus for April was definitely the Australasian Quilt Convention. It was a big decision for me whether to attend as a delegate, which I have enjoyed immensely in previous years, or as an exhibitor. Obviously I decided to attend as an exhibitor. It was a steep learning curve, we took far too much stock and brought a lot home. I met up with many of you who receive the emails. It is nice to put faces to names and to realise that the newsletters are appreciated. Hello to those new subscribers who have joined us recently.
There was a lot on offer at AQC. The market place was the biggest it has been in the years that I have attended. There were also some varied quilts in the exhibition. Some serious time and effort
has been put into some of those quilts. I find myself appreciating quilts on so many different levels. Some I admire the time that has obviously been spent in both the design and construction. For some others they are really not to my taste but wow for the quilting/piecing. And for those that used 1,000’s of tiny hexagons, how did they keep track of them during the construction phase?
Patchwork and quilting offers so many options. Piecing, by hand or machine, appliqué achieved with so many techniques, quilting by hand or machine with so many threads to choose from. There really is something for everyone. What is your favourite?
New
We have some new batiks and some new fabrics that we used to prepare kits for AQC. Most of them will appear on the website in the next few weeks. I simply ran out of time to keep the website updated.
Katie Friesen has given me permission to print her books here.
The Australian Version of Ode to Morris includes a pattern for a one block wall hanging. Katie made one and sent it out for AQC in place of her quilt. Her book Template Free Appliqué gives some great instructions for a simple method of appliqué.
Rainbow Stars
and Circle of Life
are now available as full kits. These were a hit at AQC and are in limited supply. We have done all of the colour sorting for you so that you can achieve the colour shift that Jacqueline has in her quilts.
We also have some new patterns from Jacqueline de Jonge to load on the website. For those who attended AQC and missed their copy of Rainbow stars or Circle of Life if you wish to order one please do so by the end of the week so that I can order one from Holland for you.

Talking point
Oh how time flies. Bryson turns 3 this week. We had an enjoyable day taking him to a miniature train park with some family. His train cake was well received, although he though the icing and M&Ms decorating it were better. He was lucky to get lots of cars for his birthday and when the parents-in-law visit he can have another mini party.
Then we had Easter. I hope Easter Bunny found your house. He left a trail of solid eggs here from one end of the house to the other. Then a little boy left a trail of foil! Bryson has always been an early riser. He must have eaten 3 or 4 before he came in to tell us that he’d found them and offered some to share. Most special was the hot cross buns because Merryn could eat those too (she did have a little chocolate rabbit that Daddy helped her with).
Birthdays and special occasions are interesting with a young family. It has meant discovering traditions different to your own. Some are so ingrained that you never really thought that there was a different way of doing it. Some traditions you adopt, others meld together and become new ones. Do you have traditions unique to your family?
New
We have a few new fabrics just arrived. Bejeweled is a pretty range reminiscent of Christmas decorations. The wavy lines appear in three colourways. If fresh green and black is your style the new Hoffman batiks are sure to win your heart
. By request fat quarter packs of the 8 different fabrics are available. These will make a great start to a fresh quilt from high quality fabric.
Bev has a new pattern for us.
Her Tulip Medallion quilt is a rectangular medallion quilt featuring piecing and appliqué. Make one in vibrant red and green as Bev has done or go for a blue and white feel.
Coming soon
I have received notice that the most recent delivery of batiks from Indonesia has landed in Melbourne. In the next few weeks will be unpacking and preparing them.
Unfortunately this delivery will result in a price rise so if you have been eyeing off the fabrics then now is the time to place your order.
The Australian Quilt Convention is our next stop.
April 29 – May 2 at the Royal Exhibition Building. If you’re going to be there then please come and see us for a special discount voucher. The team at Expertise who coordinate the event thave advised of some Easter specials. If you were thinking of going ,then log on to their website. I can recommend the event, it has been well coordinated the years that I have been.
Katie Friesen has agreed to allow publishing of a couple of her books in Australia. This will make supply easier and has resulted in an addition to her book Ode to Morris. In celebration of Katie’s books being published Katie made a wall hanging and has sent it over. The instructions for the wall hanging will appear in the Australian version of the publication. It is currently being printed and we will have copies on deck at AQC. You can pre-order your s now by return email.

Talking point
The year is fast disappearing.
I am sure that time moves faster now than when I was a child. I have heard an interesting theory on why time seems to move quicker as we age. For a 3 year old, a year is a third of their life. For a 30 year old a year is a thirtieth. Therefore, as we age a year becomes a smaller percentage of our life. The other theory is that we now try to pack so much into our lives that there is always something that we never achieve. What ever the reason, I seem to run out of week and then month before I know it. I am certainly not getting as much sewing done as I like but then I don’t think I know a quilter who does.
The kids and I had a trip to Melbourne this month. We stopped in at a couple of my suppliers. Most exciting was stopping in at Always Quilting. Jenny Scott accepted delivery of a quilt for quilting to adorn the backdrop at our ACQ stand (29 & 30 April & 1 & 2 May 2010). Jenny is my Aurifil thread
supplier and this was the first time we had dropped in for a visit. Bryson had marvellous fun rearranging the threads, I hope I got them all back in place before we left.
I will be having a range of Aurifil threads on the stand at AQC. I also picked up some samples of some new thread boxes. I have acquired a new love, threads. Lots of people have fabric stashes but don’t forget that a thread stash is also important. I’m not quite sure what it is about variegated threads but I find that I gravitate towards them. Aurifil have a range of single colour variegations which is great for a subtle quilting on a tone on tone fabric. Or use them on a plain to liven it up a little.
I am also working on some new variations on current patterns and quilts to offer.
Keep your eyes out for some new options to make your quilting journey easier.
New
The Star Bright Quilt is now ready.
This quilt has been made using the Indonesian Batiks exclusive to Chocolate Coated from a pattern of Bev Darby’s. The blue/black background makes the stars simply glow. It is easy to piece using the enclosed templates or with a set of Marti Michell templates which we can source for you.
Cute birds in delicate shades of pink, yellow and purple can be found on the new fabrics from Moda. The Eden range
would delight a young girl or would be a nice feature in a nursery. Available in yardage or fabric packs, there is also a suitable border print.
Some samples have arrived from Aurifil.
There are thread collections on offer, which whilst not in stock will be ordered in for you. These boxes are fantastic. The Basics Collection is fantastic for piecing. You’ll find a thread for just about any project in this box of 12. The Pat Sloan Collection is also basics for appliqué and quilting. Looking at the box and my range of backing fabrics, most quilting projects would be covered. I have introduced a new method of purchase for you. You can purchase your thread box in one transaction or spread it over 3 months. The threads work out quite a bit cheaper for you by purchasing the collections and by spreading the payment I hope to make it easier for everybody to take advantage of the savings.
Coming soon
We have been working on some more downloadable patterns.
This format has proved popular so we will increase the range for you.
I have had a partial delivery of fabrics arrive for a quilt that I’m sure that you will love. The rest of the range should arrive in a few weeks so that I can piece a sample for you. It is a Batik look Asian inspired quilt. It will be easy to piece but dramatic. If you want a sneek peek visit the Robert Kaufman website and look at the Twelve Moons range.
I am also preparing another order of our Batiks for delivery in about 6 weeks. They’ve proved popular so I will be increasing the range. I am also formulating some pre-cuts in these fabrics.

Most of the time your treat is a quilt. This month this Bow Tote caught my eye when I was catching up on the Robert Kaufman website.

Talking point
I’d like to share a quilting story with you. It is an experience that I feel has helped me grow.
A few years ago I started a quilt for my nephew for his transition to a big bed. I think I was trying to complete it for his 2nd birthday. He turns 5 in July this year. I then decided that as he was to have twin beds that I would make 2. It wasn’t going as well as I hoped so it got put away.
Then his brother arrived so I thought that I would make it one for each of them and put them up on the design wall. I ran out of fabric and one I couldn’t get any more of. I tried to source some but only half heartedly. The pieces stayed up on the design wall. Bryson used to delight in the plane and the fire truck. I just felt frustrated.
In the approach to Christmas last year I decided that I needed to clear it from the design wall so that other quilts could use it. I had been laying out quilts on the floor. I bought another fabric that was a similar yellow and had stars instead of dots. I unpicked a few seams and just got on with it. The week before Christmas I quilted both quilts. On the way to the in-laws for Christmas I got one bound and the other I finished on the return trip. Apparently the quilts look great on the boys beds but now their pillows don’t match! Luckily I have some fabric leftover. My design wall is clear as is a part of my head that was feeling blocked by them.
I learnt that while putting a project away can help, procrastination can go a little too far. When I finally got the pieces together again I realised that there wasn’t as much to do to finish them as I had feared. Seeing them finally finished was a great weight lifted. I think I used more energy avoiding the project than it took me to finish them.
I am attending AQC this year as an exhibitor. It was a big decision for me as I usually go as a delegate and really enjoy myself. If you haven’t been before I can truly recommend it. Classes and tickets can be booked online.
New
Animal Noises Quilt is a new kit
and pattern available. It is a delightful child’s quilt. The quilt is easy to piece and uses 16 different animal fabrics. The perfect size for a nap, for in the car or pram, it is available in blues or pinks. The pattern is also available in print
or download format.
New fabrics
include some fantastic blenders from Moda. The Boutique range offers some pink and green hues which would be useful in just about any project.
Animal Alphabet has also arrived. This range offers some bright coordinates that also work with the Dinosaur Uproar range. Any childs quilt would brighten up with the strips for a binding borders.
For fans of Laurel Burch her Dancing Horses range is bound to impress. Once again vibrant colours feature in these fabrics. The range includes a border print and coordinates as well as horse prints in different sizes.
Some more Jacqueline de Jong patterns
have arrived. If you were waiting on your copy of Pretty Purple or Pink Delight they’re back in stock
Coming soon
The Star Bright Quilt has just come off the sewing machine. It is an adaptation of Bev Darby’s Blue and Green Star Delight pattern
. The quilt uses our exclusive range of batiks. It is called Star Bright because Bev’s stars simply glow against a dark background. There is a preview photo posted on our Facebook page. We’ll attend to the required pattern rewrite and then the kit will be available.
In focus
In the approach to Valentine’s day what better quilt to focus on than Dorothy Clark’s Blue Hearts quilt.
It is a gorgeous quilt that features Celtic knot work hearts, Dresden fans and log cabin blocks. While it may look a little intimidating at first, completed in units, it is achievable by hand or machine. Make yours a Blue Hearts quilt or simply change the colour to suit your own decor. It is available as a pattern, kit or starter kit.

Talking point:
I have had a busy December and Christmas period. I am now taking a breath so that I can get on top of everything. I don’t know how it happened but my December was a week shorter than I thought it was going to be. I hope you all had a good festive season and here’s to a great 2010.
I accomplished most of what I set out to do over the festive period. Happiest of all is that I finally got to dye my own fabrics! For so long it has been something that I longed to do but didn’t really know where to start. Lois (my mother-in-law) and I dyed a rainbow and even each of the kids dyed a fat eighth each. They all achieved different results and were happy to try something different. I have posted some photos on Facebook for you to have a look at. A couple of ladies have sets to give their own dyeing a go. I have a few more supplies if you’d like to try it.
It was great to do something that I had longed to do for so long. I have been clearing unfinished quilts over the last month or so in a bit of a purge so that I can get into a few more want to dos for 2010. I’d like to push my boundaries a little and try some new things to see what I can really achieve. Have you pushed your boundaries recently?
Bryson drew the lucky winner for our “thanks for shopping prize” Carolyn Croke is our lucky winner of the Nutex Calendar panel and 4 fat quarter coordinates. Shopping in 2010 will get you in the next draw.
Hello to those who dropped in at the Farmer’s and Craft Market at the Port of Sale (Victoria) on New Year’s Day. I will be there again on the First Friday of February from 4:30pm. Make sure you say hi.
New:
We have some new fabrics that arrived while I was away over Christmas. I haven’t got them on the website yet so keep your eye out over the next few weeks. There’s some nice blenders and some bright kids ones.
I also picked up a new book from Anni Downs- “A Boys Story” The book features a selection of quilts for boys young and old. In Anni’s style they feature stitching and appliqué elements.
I have made some changes to the website. Most you probably won’t notice as they were behind the scenes or just small tweaks. One of the big changes is flat rate shipping. This will allow you to calculate your shipping costs prior to finalising your order. The most you’ll ever pay within Australia for standard postage is $9.90. For orders over $200.00, we pay the shipping within Australia.
Thank you to those who provide feedback as to how they are finding the website. It helps me make changes to make your shopping experience as smooth as possible. I have some other small ones lined up that will increase the amount of free information available on the website. Please remember our help section which can often answer some of the technical questions about the website.
Coming soon:
More patterns from Jacqueline de Jonge are on their way. Jacqueline’s patterns have proved very popular. I am slowly increasing the range available. Her designs are very striking and are often brightly coloured.
As always there is something happening with my sewing machine. In the next few months I will have some more designs for children’s quilts which are easily manageable. I am also increasing the availability of some free patterns and information in an easy to download format.
In Focus:
Pre cut fabrics are becoming popular as people become time poor and want to spend time sewing rather than cutting fabric. There are so many possibilities over and above the simple fat quarter. A Jelly Roll is made up of 2.5” strips, usually 40 and is produced by Moda. Many other fabric producers have their own range of pre cuts. It is now possible to purchase strips, squares and triangles in various sizes. The ModaBakeshop is a great place to look if you want some inspiration for your own pre-cuts or if you’ve always wondered what people do with theirs.

Get ready for Christmas
It's approaching... Our fabrics packs and kits make great presents.

News from November 2009
Talking point:
We have a jam packed newsletter this month. Many of us have turned our minds to Christmas. Somehow it manages to sneak up even though we have 12 months notice of the next one. This year we are travelling into
New South Wales for Christmas with my in-laws. Bryson is getting to a good age for presents. He doesn’t really know about Santa yet and wouldn’t talk to him in the shopping centre yesterday even with the possibility of a lollypop. I'm sure he'll grow into the idea!
I had some mad idea of finishing 5 quilts for the kids (nieces nephews etc) for Christmas. I might actually get there. At the moment I have 4 out of 5 tops completed and ready for quilting. If I only found some time to get them on the frame…
November is when the wholesalers market is held in
Melbourne. It is a great time to see what is coming in the way of fabrics and notions and to see what designers are presenting for patterns. It can be inspiring and overwhelming all at once. It is a great test to my patience as I gather ideas but the fabrics won’t be delivered for months. I did get some new Westalee rulers for you to try. They would make great stocking stuffers or Kris Kringle presents.
I’m looking to next year and ways that I can better assist my customers. I love your feedback on the kits, patterns or the website. Some I can easily address and others take more time.
If you’ve got any comments please drop a line. I’d like to help make your patchwork a pleasure. There will be some changes to the website to make things a little easier for you. I’ll let you know more as they are ready to go.
Thank you to all who have shopped with Chocolate Coated this year. It has been a tough year for many. I would like to reward you for your loyalty and will have a New Years draw, more information follows below.
New:
There are a number of fat quarter and panel packs
now available on the website. These packs are guaranteed to coordinate as they mostly come from the same range of fabrics. They would make great gift ideas or a brilliant starting point for your new 2010 project.
We have a number of new fabrics that arrived in November. Play Ball is a fantastic range for those who love to use bright fabrics. The combination of brights against a mottled black background would be a fantastic starting point for your next childrens quilt. Laurel Burch has another range that has been released. We have a selection of the Dancing Horses range to offer. True to the Laurel Burch style vibrant colours with gold highlights are the feature of these fabrics.
Westalee Rulers have some new rulers in the range. Designed to suit jelly roll strips the stash buster rulers are great to bust your stash or scrap box also.
Express Publication, producers of AP&Q, Patchwork and Stitching etc have launched a new website that is packed with information. It has a market place and a forum as well as links to blogs etc. www.craftlovers.com
Coming soon:
More downloadable patterns will appear soon. These are a great option for those who want to sew now, rather than wait for a pattern to arrive in the post. They also have environmental and economic benefits.
I am putting together some farbic dying kits for some friends. If you have an interest in this please let me know. I will be sharing results on Facebook and you may want to join us.
We are always working on new patterns and kits for you and more will be released in the new year.
We will also be announcing some public appearances for 2010.
In Focus:
This month we look at 2 quilts made from the same range of fabrics. Dorothy Clark’s Chelsea Market Quilt
has been a popular kit, there are a few still available. Unfortunately when we kit it we are left with partial panels. Not wanting to waste beautiful roses we then put together Merryn’s Roses
from a Bev Darby pattern. The roses dance in a crazy log cabin design. It uses a freer form of construction and is a simple yet effective pattern.
Treat:
The new Laurel Burch range Dancing Horses is so nice that this month’s treat is the pattern that accompanies this range.
Members only:
This months members special price relates to a selection of patterns for cloth dolls from Hugs ‘n Kisses.
These patterns are normally $11.00 but for you they are now $10.00.
Loyalty draw. I’ve decided to reward all my customers for 2009. On New Years Eve Bryson will draw an order from the preceding 12 months and the lucky winner will receive a prize. Nutex Fabrics (www.nutex.co.nz), specialists in
New Zealand and Australian fabrics, have supplied a 2010 calendar panel, to this I have added 4 coordinating fat quarters. If you haven’t already made a purchase this year you have until 31st December 2009 to be added to the draw.

10% off fabrics for November*
Talking point:
I have been reflecting on my class samples. These are classes that I took to learn a particular skill. I have a really bad track record and I don’t believe that I have finished one of the class samples. If I am honest, once I have realised that I can do it. I want to move on to the next one.
Yes, I am impatient but I am learning to slow down a bit, so out come the class UFOS. Considering the number of classes I have taken over the years, the pile isn’t too scary. As I go through them I realise something. I took the classes to learn something not necessarily to finish the class sample.
Whilst I haven’t finished the landscape from Gloria Loughman’s class I realise that I look at colour and composition differently than I used to. While I haven’t been practising the skills from Deborah Louie’s quilting class they were invaluable when I finally sat down and quilted my Grandmother’s quilt in the ditch on my domestic machine. (I usually use the longarm on the frame)
I still haven’t finished any of the class samples but I am comfortable with it now. They’ll get done. I am sure that the quilt that I started with Jan Preston 3 or 4 years ago will look different when I finally finish it. Maybe it will be smaller.
Nb. Whilst Grandma’s quilt hasn’t been photographed there is a great photo of Merryn helping us sew it. I have posted it on the blog.
New:
Bev Darby has been busy sewing and has completed a quilt from our range of Indonesian Batiks
. Bali Delight is a simply pieced quilt that offers an opportunity to play with colour. It uses almost all of the batiks in the range so if you love Batik fabric this one is for you.
The Primavera Iris Quilt is now available.
The quilt has been made using a Michael Miller pattern designed for this range of fabrics. We have made it with a slightly different colour scheme. The iris medallion is stunning and it’s setting allows for some beautiful quilting.
The Country Sampler
is now available as a block of the month, pattern or kit. Bev has made it in country colours but brights or a simple palette of blues and yellows would work too. It uses simple piecing and appliqué in its row by row construction.
Bears in Baltimore and Sweet Dreams are two delightful patterns that Dorothy Clark has designed. We are now offering them as e-patterns, that is they are available for download on confirmation of payment. This pattern range will continue to grow. These patterns are ready when you're ready to sew.
I was lucky enough to secure some book specials from the American Quilter’s Society. These books are at a one off price. Some of them retail for over $40.00 in places. You’ll need to be quick to get yours. There are 6 different titles for $28.95 or under. Make them Christmas presents or expand your own library.
Coming soon:
The Kingyo Koi Wallhanging is receiving its final touches. It features a panel from Red Rooster fabrics depicting 2 koi fish playing in a waterfall. The delicate gold highlights and rich reds and oranges would make it a talking point on any wall.
The number of kits is limited. If you wish to secure yours you can pre-order by return email.
We have finished Merryn’s quilt for her big bed. I loved it so much and think that you will too, so I will be offering a kit. For any child or even adult who loves the jungle this will be perfect.
Bev
has prepared more patterns for you which be loaded onto the website over the next few weeks. We will also be adding to the range that are available online for download.
The blog will soon feature a quilt idea each week. I have so many ideas that I am running out of time to sew them all or write up the patterns. I thought the blog would be a great place to share them so that maybe someone else gets a chance to sew them. They will use Chocolate Coated fabrics or patterns. If you’re needing inspiration this will be the place to come.
In Focus:
Christmas is on it's way. Have you got all of your gift covered? We have a great range of kits and patterns for smaller items such as bags, table runners and wall hangings. Dorothy's bears feature on the Bear Family Wall Hanging and Teddy Bears Picnic Wall Hanging which would make great presents.
Treat:
From Timeless Treasures this bright quilt called Building Blocks is made from tone on tone fabrics and is very versatile. Use your own colour palette to create your own or replicate the original in reds oranges blues and greens.

September News
Talking point:
Comfort zones- I was reading an article the other day about challenging ourselves. I agree with its author, that we as humans develop our comfort zones and then rarely extend ourselves beyond them. Look in your stash, compare it to a colour wheel. Are all of the colour groups represented? Do you favour a particular colour or combination? What about your wardrobe? Do you favour the same colours?
I am a very blue person. I have made a deliberate effort to try and cover the colour wheel but invariably I come back to blues, purples and aquas.
I have no trouble designing quilts using bright colours but I shrink from pastels. I simply do not know what to do with them. One day I will challenge myself to make a quilt using pastels. Until then I will love using colour in as many different ways as I can find.
My challenge for next year is to make a quilt from wholely plain fabrics. I am giving myself time to finish some of my other projects as well as plan such a quilt. What’s your next challenge?
New:
I had a very exciting delivery this month. A big box of batiks direct from
Indonesia. This brings this fabric range to 23 different fabrics.
My head is spinning with ideas for their use in quilts so there’ll be some new patterns on the way.
I’ve been testing our software and now have some digital patterns ready. Once payment has been confirmed they are ready for download. We save on printing and packing costs so we pass on the savings. You also save on postage costs and time, a better option for your pocket and the environment.
Some more of Katie Friesen's books have arrived. Katie uses her own method of template free applique in her quilts. In both the Love Bug book and the Welcome Tulip Pattern she outlines this construction method. The Love Bug Book details patterns for 3 baby quilts measuring 40" square. Tulip Welcome is a wall hanging to welcome your guests.
Chocolate Coated is now on Facebook.
Join as a fan. You can share ideas or photos with other quilters. I have included a link to a simple chocolate recipe that has been a hit here.
We have added some resources to our links page. The Moda Bakeshop is a great place to find out what you can do with Jelly Rolls etc.
Coming soon:
We have some patterns in the development stage for digital download. This is a great option for those who want to start sewing now. We hope to continue rolling them out in the coming months.
I also have a couple of samples almost finished of current patterns in new fabric combinations. They’ll provide you with new kit options and sewing inspiration. If you love irises there is a new medallion quilt on the way. Bev is also working on a batik quilt.
In Focus:
The website has the ability to create a wishlist. This is a great idea in the lead up to Christmas. Let your family and friend’s know what you’d like for Christmas. You’ll receive just what you needed and they don’t have to run around everywhere to find you the perfect gift. Consider asking for a gift voucher from Chocolate Coated and make it even simpler for your gift giver or give one to a special friend.
Treat:
Ever wished you knew the maths or construction process behind quick pieced flying geese? Here is a link to our guide.

August News

Talking point:
As the year continues to flash by it is getting warmer again. It is great to be having sunshine more regularly and for longer days. With more sun and flowers blooming it’s a great time to get invigorated and start some new projects. Have you got any planned? I am waiting on a couple of fabrics to make some special projects myself. There are some on the way that will complete a batik collection for a log cabin quilt I have drafted. I find the log cabin block so versatile. I think that it is my favourite for that reason. Do you have a favourite block or technique? Perhaps there’s one that you’ve always wanted to try. Why not give it a go. Mum and I have found that Love Quilts provide a great opportunity to try those new blocks or techniques on a small scale.
Love Quilts are received by parents who have lost their child either during or shortly after birth. They are small quilts and can be finished in a number of ways. By making a small quilt you can give a block or technique a go without investing a large amount of fabric or time whilst producing something useful. Your local hospital may collect Love Quilts or the SIDS foundation in your state. If you decide you like the block or technique then you can go on to produce your masterpiece.
New:
Chocolate Coated has become an affiliate with C&T Publishing. This means that
downloadable books
can now be purchased through the website. Due to the costs saving by the publisher, the books are offered at a reduced price. The books are available as soon as payment is confirmed which makes them instantly accessible, no waiting for the postman! All you need is Adobe to view them. Not only are they a great option for your pocket but also for the environment. We’re working on our own range of downloadable patterns.
Bev has 2 new kits for us this month. Some of you have delighted in Dorothy Clark’s
Chelsea Market quilt
. When we kit this one up we have some partial medallions left over. Bev has used these left overs in her quilt
Merryn’s Roses.
Her crazy log cabin blocks frame the roses beautifully. Its free style construction method suits all skill levels.
Also I set a challenge by giving Bev a bolt of poppy fabric to turn into something wonderful and she has. The
Poppy Quilt
is a delight. The kits will be available as soon as we receive some more of the coordinating fabrics (in a week or so).
A few more patterns from
Jacqueline De Jong
have arrived. Jacqueline’s use of colour is fantastic. For those who admire her work we also have packs of notecards featuring photos of Jacqueline’s quilts. Quilters and non-quilters alike would be impressed with these photos.
The
Treasure Bay
range has arrived. Any pirate or ocean loving boy will love this cute range. Pirate bears after treasure are depicted in a panel, border and coordinating prints.
Don’t forget the
Chocolate Coated blog
that I started last month. This is the place for the latest news from Chocolate Coated.
Coming soon:
Another block of the month program from Bev called Country Sampler. As always Bev provides a combination of techniques to result in a great quilt.
A kit featuring a medallion from the Primavera Iris range is in the making and should be available next month. It’s beautiful blue and purple shades set on black make a striking quilt.
The
Classic Garden range
has arrived and will soon be loaded onto the website. Pretty pink and classic blue form the background for gardenias and hydrangeas on these fabrics. Panels, Border prints and several coordinates will have you planning your next quilt in no time.
In Focus:
The Four Square Nine Patch
is a versatile pattern from Dorothy Clark. It is constructed from squares in a sew, cut and sew again method. It is easily adapted to different sizes and fabrics. We can kit it up in fabrics of your choice, we have a child’s kit using the Leap Frog range of fabrics or make an eye spy style quilt.
Treat:
A pattern
that uses triangles to great effect to make a clever wall hanging. Alternatively use it as a centre piece of a quilt. I saw it as a waterfall. What do you make of it?

July News
Talking point:
This month has been a period of adjustments at my house. We returned home from a trip showing Merryn off to the family. Then it was down to getting a routine with a toddler and a newborn.
So far we’re settling well. Bryson is doing well as a big brother and I am learning more about myself. Bryson is a real parrot and at times is providing me with an interesting mirror image of myself. Having a 2 year old in the house can really make you reflect on your personality.
Having a new person in the house has also sparked some new quilt ideas. Now I just need some sewing time. I am making Merryn a quilt using one of Bev’s patterns and some new fabrics. I will probably make it available as a kit when it is ready. I also now have an opportunity to really use the flower fairies fabrics. I remember having them on the wall when I was a child.
New:
I have 2 new clubs for you. The first is the kids club. Choose from two options: ten 6.5” squares each mailout $7.50 or two fat quarters $12.00 of childrens fabrics. Each mailout also comes with a free pattern for a kids quilt.
The oriental club is four 30cm cuts of oriental fabrics per mailout $30.00. With all the fabric clubs you can now choose monthly or bimonthly mailouts.
I have started a blog. This will be a new way for you to keep up with the happenings at Chocolate Coated. I know that some of you used to enjoy being able to browse through Dorothy’s shop and getting a sneak peek before things made it onto the website. Being mail/internet order only you miss this. The blog will be a great place for you to see what I am sewing and what we are working on. It will also allow you to make comments sharing your views with me and with other patchworkers. You can get to the blog by clicking on the link on the bottom left side of the webpage.
Bev has prepared a new Block of the month program called Beginner’s Sampler which will be available very soon. It’s a great idea for those who want to taste a few skills and create a pretty quilt with a tulip theme in the process.
As always some new fabrics have arrived which have been loaded over the past few weeks. I have a few more to get on for you including some new bargain fabrics so keep checking in.
Coming soon:
French Braid
and French Braid Obsession
by Jane Hardy Miller are arriving this week. I also have 2 kits so that you will have everything to get started on the spectacular quilts in her books. Jane’s arrangement of colour and use of French braids is really quite clever. The
Tree skirt kit would make a lovely addition to your Christmas tree and was easy to piece. I enjoyed making the
Dinomash Quilt kit and have many other fabrics that would work as well in this cot quilt. For any of the quilts in the book I am happy to gather a collection of coordinated fabrics for your quilt.
I’ve also got a new Jacqueline de Jong pattern arriving soon. Jacqueline has recently won awards for another of her designs. Her colourful paper pieced quilts are very eye catching.
In Focus:
Blue hearts quilt has been designed by Dorothy Clark.
This stunning quilt with a heart theme can be completed mostly by hand or mostly by machine. This quilt uses lots of small pieces of lovely fabrics. It looks great whether looking at it up close or from afar. It is available in full kit form or as a starter kit and can also be purchased as a block of the month program. Kits contain fabrics for the top and binding or you may select a full kit including backing and batting. Or let us help with a starter pack.
Treat:
A pattern for a notebook cover from
Maywood studios. A great idea for keeping all your quilting ideas safe.

June News
Talking point:
There’s big news at Chocolate Coated this month. Merryn was born on the 16th June and she has settled in well. Bryson is a cute big brother and is happy to give her kisses but his cuddles are a bit rough. My niece, Abbie, was born 7 weeks premature but is now doing really well. Merryn is quite a bit bigger but at the rate that Abbie is growing she will soon catch up. Now the girls in the extended family are almost in equal number to the boys.
The 1st July was the anniversary of my taking on the business side of patchwork. It has been a big 12 months. I hope you have been enjoying the improvements. I love your feedback so please keep it coming. If there are new things that you’d like to see let me know as it helps me keep up with what’s happening. I look forward to continuing to grow into the business.
New:
Floral Fantasy is the block of the month program that some of you have been waiting for. This is the latest design from Katie Friesen. Applique hearts support blooms on a cream background. It is a perfect project for lovers of appliqué and quilting as it provides open spaces to show off your stitches.
I have also received some new patterns and 2 new books from Hatched and Patched. Anni Downs’ patterns are well loved the world over. The World as it Should Be is the newest book which features a collection based on the theme moving forward. The book includes a quilt pattern, some stitcheries and some punchneedle projects. You’ll also find Simple Pleasures which is a great purse size book of sticheries and instructions to incorporate them into a quilt, towels, magnets, bag and other designs.
Coming soon:
We are working on some new block of the month programs designed by Bev Darby. Bev has a range of patterns in her collection and we will releasing more patterns and kits over the next few months. The blocks of the month will include different techniques and colourways so there is sure to be one to suit your tastes.
I have been road testing a new book by Jane Miller Hardy. I have made quilts from her patterns before and the French Braid quilts that she is known for are visually stunning. I have ordered her books for you and they will be arriving soon. I will also have some kits available to make it easy to get started with her projects.
In Focus:
Christmas in July has us thinking forward to December. Do you have your decorations planned? We have a range of wall hangings and table runners that are certain to add a little Christmas cheer. The Joy to the World wall hanging features a delightful angel. It’s appliqué and piecing is achievable for any skill level. The quilt as you go table runner or stained glass table runner kits are available in a number of fabrics to match almost any decor. These patterns are also available if you have your own selection of fabrics.
Treat:
We have in stock some fabrics from the Nara Gardens range. Here is a free pattern from Hoffman Fabrics that uses this range.

May News

Talking point:
I was party to a couple of interesting discussions this month that I thought I would share with you. They centred on quilts for kids but more specifically quilts for small kids. It got me thinking about the quilts I make and why I make them. I thought it might also get you thinking about why you make your quilts.
I have 7 nieces/nephews on one side of the family and 6 on the other. Most of them have quilts made by myself or their grandmothers. Some of them have several. My Mum and I have made sure that all on my side have a quilt bearing their name. These were all produced in the same style but with different colours. With the latest round of arrivals there are tops ready just to have names added. These quilts were quick to piece and were designed to include a maximum of colour and interest. They were made to be thrown into the washing machine after being dragged around by the owner. The kids love these quilts and friends are putting in orders for their own children/grandchildren. The reason for making these quilts is the delight on the kids faces when they unwrap a quilt with their name on it, the delight when they find the digger or the truck or whatever the favourite is that day.
Other quilts that I make I make to try out a process so it’s the journey of the quilt that is the purpose. Sometimes these quilts don’t get quilted. I admit I am a topper! I have more patchwork methods that I want to try than I do time. I think this is common to quilters. I think the reason we are making the quilt is very important. Some reasons will see us spend a significant period of time on the fabric, colour and design process. Others will have us sewing straight away. Some will have us delight in our abilities and other may have us cringe when they didn’t quite work. Identify your reason for making your quilts and enjoy it as you sketch, sew or quilt your piece.
Bev’s profile appeared in AP&Q. It was an interesting read. You may have recognised some of the pictured quilts as being available from Chocolate Coated. We have added some more of Bev’s patterns and have more in the pipeline for you. Bev has such an array to choose from that we have had to pick some favourites, no easy task!
Some of you may have seen the ABC New Inventors program featuring Bill West. The Westalee Rulers won the people's choice awards from 2008. They have some new rulers in the testing phase. I can't wait to see them when they are available. If you're looking for a tool to increase your cutting accuracy these are it. Here is a website that tells you some more of the Westalee Rulers success story.
New:
The website has undergone some renovations to make your shopping experience safer and hopefully easier. I know that some of you have recently experienced some troubles when trying to order. Thank you for your perseverance. I hope we have ironed out all of those troubles now. Please remember that membership to the email list doesn’t mean that you have a customer membership on the website.
My website security has also undergone some upgrades which are rolling out in the final stages this week. Your credit card payments will be processed through the National Australia Bank website directly. They have far better resources than I to ensure that your transactions are safe. I also now have a Paypal payment option which is an additional secure method. For those who have reservations about entering their details online, I am more than happy to take a phone order.
The last of the Flower Fairies panels on order has finally arrived. As pretty as the others, Sunshine Fairies has so many possibilities. I have also had some beautiful oriental fabrics arrive with more on the way. The large scale print of the koi fish in the Nobu Fujiyama range would make a great panel/medallion for a quilt. The Sheri Berry Holiday range offers a slight twist on the traditional colours of Christmas. Using aqua and dark pink/red the fabrics feature traditional motifs.
Some new Jacqueline de Jonge patterns are on their way and should be here in a week or two. Have a look at Jacqueline’s website to see her recent award winning design.
I’ve also decided to change the newsletter a little. I had great feedback when I offered a link to a free pattern in the last newsletter. I will provide a treat in each newsletter for you. I have also added a section called “In Focus” which will look at a product or range within the store in more detail. And last of all a "member’s only" section which will offer a deal only to members of the newsletter list.
Coming soon:
I have entered a nesting stage, as with most pregnancies. I have been collating some specials for you and rearranging my stock. Keep an eye on the website and the next newsletter for some specials that are sure to catch your eye.
In Focus:
Le Spring Bouquet is a range beautifully coordinated fabrics presented Northcott fabrics and designed by Beverlyann Stillwell. The central fabrics are rose panels in 2 colourways with border fabrics and coordinates also on offer. Northcott have presented a kit for this range which is also available in limited numbers. The quilt would fit a queen size bed and be a feature in any bedroom. For any lover of roses this is a range that is sure to delight.
Treat:
Kona Bay supply quality Asian fabrics on their website I also found that in addition to free patterns they also have some free recipes. Here is one for an easy dinner that even has a desert recipe!

April News

Big news at Chocolate Coated!
I’ve been keeping it to myself but Jason and I are expecting a new addition to our family in June. May will be a month for me trying to get myself as organised as possible before I have an extra person to juggle. For Bryson I made a small hospital quilt to bring him home in but I haven’t done that yet so I will also have to get to some sewing. It is busy time for us with babies in the family. My sister-in law is due any day and my sister is due just days after me.
It seems that even though there were some hot summer days that it was all packed into one month. We have the fire going most nights to keep the chill off. I hope this email finds you and your families well. There seems to be so many things going on worldwide that this is a time to look after our friends and families. Small things make a big difference. Do something today, make that phone call to a friend that you have been putting off or say hello to a stranger you pass in the street.
I have been busy in April organising some new kits for you. There are also some more on the drawing board. I have also been working on securing a new block of the month designed by Katie Friesen. I have a photo of it and have seen all of the blocks. It will be a delight for those who love appliqué and room to show off their quilting. Hopefully I’ll be able to offer it soon.
New
We were expecting Bev Darby’s profile to be published in Australian Patchwork and Quilting. Something went wrong and it didn’t appear. Bev’s newest quilt was to be launched as part of the profile. Instead you now get to have first access to it. Japanese Butterfly is available in 4 colourways and kits are limited. The quilt showcases a beautiful Japanese floral print surrounded by paper pieced butterflies. The pattern would work well with any Japanese or floral print if you have some in your own stash that you just can’t bear to cut into small pieces.
I have also developed kits incorporating the Flower Fairies into a single bed quilt. The quilt is easy to piece and makes efficient use of the panels from the Michael Miller range. Last month I also referred to a quilt from the
Moonlight
Gardens range of fabrics that had just arrived. Moonlit Rose is now available. It is a simple quilt that shows off this range of fabrics to great effect. A Sudoku inspired layout, it also features a little appliqué.
As usual we have had new fabrics arrive during the month. For those who like the brights Wishes and Dreams is a vibrant range that includes a couple of butterfly fabrics. The Bunny’s Day Out Panel arrived last month. This month the coordinating fabrics arrived. The fabrics are very cute and are featured in a free pattern sheet on the Wilmington Prints website. The
Hill
Country
Springs
Range from Moda is like a spring garden. It features a range of realistic blooms against different coloured backgrounds. Many of them would work well in a landscape type quilt.
A members only special
For the month of May any members signing up for the Rainbow Fabric or Thread Clubs will receive one month free. This will work as a pay up front for 11 months and receive 12. Or sign up for 12 months and receive months 6 and 12 at half price. This is a great opportunity for those who love colour and want to build either their fabric stash or start a thread collection that encompasses the rainbow.

March News

Bryson turns 2 this month. On the weekend we had a “Day Out with Thomas” with most of the cousins. We have 4 whose birthday’s fall within a 6 week period, 3 of those were born in the same year. It makes for good fun when they get together. They all had a fantastic time with all of the activities and the train ride. Lots of cake was eaten and worn. Thank goodness for the jumping castle to wear off some of the sugar before we put them back in the car!
I’ve been busy this month doing some sewing. I am in the process of writing a pattern for you for a versatile range of fabrics from Hoffman Fabrics. I have also been looking over some of Katie Friesen’s work to decide what to bring you next from Canada. Bev Darby has been busy too. Some of you may have seen two of her projects recently. “My Tulip Collection” featured in Australian Patchwork and Quilting and “Chick Chick Here” featured in Patchwork and Stitching. We have kits available for both. Bev also has her profile appearing in Australian Patchwork and Quilting this month. Keep an eye out for it as some new quilts will feature. One spectacular quilt called Japanese Butterfly will only be available from Chocolate Coated. I am getting the last of the fabrics together now for the kits.
New
We have unveiled some new patterns from Bev Darby. Those on offer cover a range of easy to piece projects. For those who like portable projects, "Rainbow Hexagons" is sure to catch your eye. If you’ve got a collection of scraps just waiting for the perfect project “Scrappy Stars Quilt” is it.
Katie Friesen’s "Ode to Morris" has finally arrived. It is available as a pattern only, kit or block of the month. Due to its popularity it had to be reprinted before I could get stock. Also available is "Emerge", a medallion quilt. I have also taken possession of a copy of Floral Fantasy. This is a block of the month Program that Katie has designed for the Quilter’s Jewel in Canada. I will now set to organising the appropriate fabrics so that you too can have access to it. Keep your eye on the website or the newsletter for its availability.
The batik fabrics that I ordered direct from Indonesia have arrived. Due to the middle man being cut out I am able to offer you a reduced price of $14 p/metre, this is an introductory price. I am impressed by the quality of these batiks and I am looking forward to starting my own project with them.
More flower fairies have arrived with more on the way. I have a number of coordinates that work with these panels. Please let me know if I can assist in teaming up fabrics. Moonlight Gardens is a new range from Hoffman Fabrics which includes some interesting border fabrics. Moonlit Rose is the quilt that I have made from these fabrics which will be available soon.
A great gift idea has arrived. Sweet Rolls are rolls of 1.5” strips from Moda. They have packaged them as a “Sweet Roll Box”. This means that you get 2 small rolls of strips and a free pattern. Each roll has the right number of strips to make a “Sweet Treat Bag” with the enclosed pattern. This is great idea to give as a gift to someone who sews or sew them yourself and give the bags away without having to buy lots of fabric.
For those who love orientals we have some new ones from Kokka that offer traditional motifs in new colour variations. We also have some in the Nara Gardens range that offers large scale cranes and foliage with some useful coordinating fabrics.
Until next month, Happy stitching!

February News

Lara Gibbons 0404 074 030
February News
As February melts into March I am playing catch up. I spent 4 days down at the Australasian Quilt Convention. It has certainly grown in popularity over the years that I have been visiting. A great many women and some men attend and find it a real treat. I would certainly recommend it if you haven’t been before. Congratulations to all who won awards in the exhibitions and the raffles that were run. I attended a couple of classes and enjoyed them both. I learnt skills that I hope to apply to some of the current patterns to offer new combinations.
Just prior to AQC we had some fairly significant fires. We were able to see a lot of the fires in the Gippsland/Latrobe Valley area and spent a few days in smoke haze. We had to practice our fire plan 2 years ago so everything was set up again on the off chance that we’d need it. Fortunately we didn’t. The quilting community has started what it does so well and quilts are being made for those in fire affected areas as well as collections of sewing items and fabric to replenish sewing rooms that are now to be built. I have
linked a page
that I will update if you want information about collections occurring. The longer term goal will be to link up with a service club such as Rotary or Lions for distribution in a few months.
New
Bev Darby has had a couple of projects published in magazines this month, one in Patchwork and Stitching and the other in Australian Patchwork and Quilting. Kits for both are available but are limited. Bev also has some more in the pipeline for us. Some more of her patterns will soon be available on the website.
Due to special request I have ordered some new patterns from Jacqueline de Jonge. Unfortunately the poor exchange rate has meant a price increase for her patterns. Other items may see increases filtering through as my suppliers have increased many of their prices.
New fabrics are always arriving. For those who love the Mrs March fabrics a new range has just arrived, I unpacked it today. Antique Roses and Tulips abound on these fabrics. I’ve also received a couple of great kids panels. Alpha Buddies would make a great cot quilt or centre panel for a young child. Each letter of the alphabet is represented by an animal in nice cheery colours. Space Ranger is a larger panel displaying the planetary system and constellations. The stars and other features glow in the dark. The Funny Babies panels would also be great in a nursery.
New kits include the What a Circus Quilt from Wilmington prints. The delightful circus scene features elephants and clowns and would delight any young child. Dorothy’s Large Scale Feature Print Quilt has now been kitted up in a smaller size using children prints. It is easy to piece and gives an effective quilt.
Coming Soon
I have come across some quality batik fabrics direct from Indonesia. They were shipped today. I will only have a limited supply in the initial transport. This lot will be selling for $14.00 p/metre as a once off. They should be on the website in a couple of weeks. For those who are fans of Katie Friesen I hoped to have Ode to Morris in stock by now. The book went out of print so I have had to wait for it to be reprinted. I am told that it should be available from the printers at the end of the week. We might have it in Australia by the end of the month. I did find that Katie has designed a new block of the month, so new that the sample quilt isn’t yet finished. I have asked to be the only Australian source for the program which will roll out in a month or two. Floral Fantasy features delightful needle turn flowers against hearts.

December/January News

December January News
I hope you have had a nice break over the Christmas New Year period. We are well and truly into 2009 now. We had a rest over Christmas and caught up with family. Bryson is just old enough to have worked out presents. It was great to see the kids get into it this year. Whilst we didn’t catch the fish in the photo below while we were on holidays it was nice for my brother-in-law’s mate to be able to say that he caught a Tuna as big as a 2 year old!
Locally we have been experiencing bush fires. Two and half years ago it was in our backyard literally! This year we have had some smoke affects but otherwise we can just watch and hope that people are safe. It is maddening to think that someone, in all likelihood, has deliberately lit these fires. It brings out the best and worst in people and we have heard some terribly sad and also some terribly brave stories. My heart goes out to those who may be caught in the middle or even on the fringes of it. So far no loss of life, we can only hope that that aspect does not change.
On the Horizon
I have had a special request for some of
Jacqueline de Jong’s pattern so I have ordered some more of her designs. They will arrive in about 2 weeks. If you like her work, keep your eye out for them. I have also ordered the next 2 patterns from
Katie Friesen. I know that some of you are fans of her William Morris inspired appliqué. If you would like to be notified when any of these new items arrive drop me
an email
and I will let you know when they land.
Bev Darby has more of her patterns featuring in AP&Q. She also has a profile in the April edition. For some of her patterns I will have kits available. Bev has been working with fabrics from Chocolate Coated to provide you with some special projects. Hopefully we will be able to unveil some soon.
I am attending the Australasian Quilt Convention in February/March I will be there for the 4 days, taking part in 2 classes
Dijanne Cevaal: Playing with Tifaifai, Thursday 26th Feb & Friday 27th Feb and Kim Bradley: Feather Fantasy, Saturday 28th Feb & Sunday 1st March. For those who have never been to AQC, it is well worth the visit for the exhibition and marketplace for more info
www.aqc.com.au
is the place to go. If you see me down there say hello.
New
Bev's
Tulip Rhapsody Block of the Month program is now up and running. For those who expressed interest in the program it can now be ordered via the website.
I have been working on some new kits for you using new fabrics that have arrived. The one below is
Dorothy’s Large Scale Feature Print
pattern in a smaller size and using kids prints. Bryson helped sew this one and had input with the layout. I think he is going to be quite useful on the sewing machine. I have another in progress using
Bev’s Cross Roads to
Jericho pattern which I think you’ll love. Hopefully I will be able to share it with you next month.
Some great fabrics arrived over Christmas. There is a panel that provides the fabric and instructions for you to complete a
family tree wall hanging.
We have a
geisha panel
that provide the basis for you to embellish. To compliment the geisha panel there are
2 coordinate panels
that have several fabrics within. These will help you decorate the geisha or would work well for those who make minatures or clothes for dolls or bears. For those who make landscapes or require textures printed on their fabrics the
new fabrics sections offer several textures. There are also some great kids panels including one to make an Australian ABC cloth book.
Several of you have enquired about Dorothy. I asked her to send through a message for the newsletter.
From Dorothy
"There have been times in my life when I've wanted to take my sewing machine to the tip. And then after a rest I come back to my passion for textiles. After I sold the business to Lara and retired, I felt that way about lots of things. I just wanted to hibernate for a while. Well, I did, and read lots of books, and started a Uni course in History. I'm just loving the History, but now I need to take a term off. Hibernation time is over. It didn't help that I got sick and ended up in Hospital. But all's well now."
"I have set a challenge with my little sewing group. To start with, I suggested they gather a few things they want to work with, including 'something old, and something new' I am using a linen tablecloth that I've had for 44 years, never used. When I die it will probably go to the Op shop, so I might as well cut it up. I still haven't decided on my something new, but I think I will use a fairly large piece of fabric which will work as a border. Then everything else will have to work with that."
"The goal is to make a quilt of squares - mine will be probably 12", and put them together with a quilt as you go method as per my sampler quilts. Each month one person in the group will set the topic for the next block. I am setting the first month and it will be '9-patch'. I have decided I want to make Crazy pieced blocks, and will use a little 9-patch as part of my block, but its just as legitimate to do a plain 9 patch block.. Then someone else gets to choose. Suggestions are: a block, a technique, or a subject. Can be for instance 'umbrellas', 'strippy', 'folded triangles'. Don't know how we'll go as people have all kinds of levels of confidence and skills."
Happy sewing
Dorothy

November News
The weather is warming and the days are getting longer. November was a busy month for me. I saw some of you at the Tyers Quilt Exhibition as part of the Tyers Art Festival. Those who attended seemed to be impressed by the quilts on display. I always love to see the variations that are possible in the world of quilts. Colours and techniques can produce so many different pieces of work. Congratulations to all who entered their work.
I also attended the Australian Quilt Market which is a wholesalers event. I happened upon some exciting products which I hope to bring to you next year. Available now from the Market are some sweet rolls from Moda. These are new in the Moda pre-cut fabrics range. Like a jelly roll they are formed by strips, but the sweet rolls are 1.5” strips. They are great for those who just want to get down and sew and perfect for log cabins, three rail fence and other blocks. I also have some Flower Fairies Panels. I loved the flower fairies as a young girl and they still capture my heart. I have a couple of pregnant family members and am hoping that we get a girl so that I can put one together.
On the weekend I attended a bag workshop run by Annette Stevenson. We made a bag and cosmetic purse each. I learned some great skills but also something about myself, I prefer making quilts to bags. We all have our specialties and I think when we learn these we can work with them.
Some food for thought
Whilst at the Quilt Market I caught up with Jenny Scott, distributor of Aurifil Threads. I thought I would share with you some of Jenny’s thoughts. Jenny is a long arm machine quilter and sees a lot of other peoples work. We were talking about thread choices, I have 2 spools that I piece my quilts with, a black for predominantly black quilts and beige for everything else. Jenny commented that we spend a lot of time choosing our fabrics for our quilts, the pattern and the placement of the blocks. We spend time sewing these quilts either for ourselves or others and then we quilt them. Jenny has seen many quilts that are let down because of the thread choice for the piecing. Once she gets to quilt them some seams become quite obvious because of the choice of thread for the piecing. She suggests that you also need to think about the thread you use to piece your quilts to make the seams as unobtrusive as possible. Her theory is that every quilt, even a scrap one, has a dominant colour. Pick this colour in your quilt and piece with a thread that is slightly darker than this dominant colour, then when pressing iron to the darkest fabric. This should have your piecing and quilting standing out on your quilt instead of the seams. Jenny has combined her selection of piecing threads available in our piecing thread club to provide you with a range of threads to suit any quilter.
Westalee Rulers
The ABC’s New Inventors Program awarded the Westalee Rulers the viewers choice price for this year. This is a great feat both for the Leonie and Bill West and for the quilting world. It is rare that quilting is placed in such a spotlight. In celebration of such a great achievement December’s special involves these rulers. This is the first of many subscriber only offers. A purchase of any of the Westalee Ruler range will attract a 5% discount. The discount code you need is WAR5. The discount will be calculated at checkout on the website. If you are ordering by mail or phone please quote the code to receive the discount. Customers not receiving the newsletter will not get this discount. This offer is open on orders until the 31st December 2008.
New
Bev Darby is preparing her first block of the month. Tulip Rhapsody will be starting in mid-late December. Bev's Quilt features delightful tulips and is available in three colour variations. I am continuing to source some specials from my suppliers. Today I will be adding even more to the $15.00 range. You’ll be able to find aliens, wizards, koi, roses and many others in this range.
Also in the new fabrics category you will find the Flower Fairies panels this afternoon. I also fell in love with the pretty peacock which is a new oriental print. I have made it into a wall hanging I am happy to prepare a kit with some basic intructions if you would like one of your own.

October Newsletter
October
October was a busy month but I managed to get some sewing in. Bryson loves to ‘help’, he has a fascination with the sewing machine and loves to push all the buttons. Sometimes he even feeds the fabric through for me. He loves the new fabrics and shuffles the bolts when they arrive. He seems to love colour just as I do. One of the new kits is made from fabric that he didn’t want to give back to the sales rep. I hope you like it as much as he does.
I am a member of Latrobe Valley Quilters. In mid October we had a teaching weekend. We are always well looked after at the weekends and get a great chance to sew. Gloria Loughman was my tutor. I spent 2 days creating an abstract quilt which will hang on the wall when I finish. Gloria is a great tutor, we always get lots out of her.
I’ve had reason of late to think about the quilts I make and why. It is a discussion point that has come up before. Few of the quilts I’ve made live at my house. Most are made for charity, friends and relatives. I believe that if it wasn’t for the range of reasons that I make my quilts that I wouldn’t have made the variety that I have. I have put together colour combinations and styles that I would never have done had they been for me. This has extended my skill level and my confidence. Why do you make the quilts you do?
New look website
The new look site went live 2 weeks ago. It all went fairly smoothly.
Thanks to those who have given me feedback. It allows me to further develop the website for you, the shoppers. If you’ve got anything to add to the gallery or the tips please send them to me. Consider it a forum for you and your fellow stitchers.
The new website allows you to create a profile so that your address and even a wishlist are stored. You will need to set these up yourselves if you wish for one to be created.
I only have your email addresses stored in my database.
Of those who wish to continue to receive the newsletter if you could subscribe via the new site (the bottom right of every page has a box) or reply email ‘subscribe’. This will allow me to clean up the mailing list.
There are still a few things that haven’t been unpacked on the new site. If there is something that you are looking for please contact me.
New
I have 2 new kits this month. They are both variations on Dorothy Clark patterns.
Leap Frog features a cute frog in the pond and is available in 2 sizes. Bryson loves this fabric!
Christmas Table Runner is a quilt as you go pattern. It is pre-cut, just add wadding and you have a table runner to brighten your Christmas table. I made mine in an afternoon.
Aurifil threads are now available at Chocolate Coated. There is in excess of 130 colours in 4 different thread weights. I am in the process of getting them all on the website for you.
This time of year the suppliers are clearing out fabrics ready for the new ranges for 2009. I have purchased some for you and passed on the savings. There are some great fabrics for you to make a quilt at a reduced price.
Tristesse, my Mum, has a made a version of Bev Darby’s Chinese Lantern Quilt and donated it to the Dialysis Unit at Sale Hospital (Gippsland, Victoria). The unit is raffling the quilt to raise funds. For further particulars please follow the link. If you have a similar community/fundraising event send me the details so I can put them on the site for you.
Tyers Art Festival
This weekend 8th and 9th November
the Tyers Art Festival is holding it’s inaugural quilt exhibition. On the Sunday I will have a stall. If you’re local come and say hi.

new ownership
Well the dust has settled on the change over at Chocolate Coated. All of the stock has been packed, moved and unpacked at Toongabbie, Victoria. Making adjustments for third parties such as solicitors, accountants and IT people it went fairly smoothly.
Given that this is my first newsletter I will give you a little background information. I bought the mail order side of the business and relocated it to my home. This allows me to work odd hours around a young son. Bryson is 15 months old and already loves sewing machines and helps rearrange the blocks for my quilts. He is a cheeky little man but we love him lots. I have been patchworking for a few years now. My hobby/obsession was kicked off by a sampler course at Magic Patch Quilting. Since then I am generally self taught but I enjoy the odd class with my patchworking group or at conferences. I have several nieces and nephews so many of my quilts are made for them. I also team with my Mum to make quilts for several charitable purposes. We both agree that this allows us to make quilts other than those that we would make for ourselves.
As is human nature I have different tastes than Dorothy I hope that I can continue to bring you the same kinds of products that you have come to expect. I am also sure that there will be some new ones and some new methods. If you have any feedback I’d love to hear it.
Whilst unpacking I have learnt that I severely miscalculated the amount of space that I had versus the space that I actually needed. I have put some specials in the Bargain Basement to help clear the room for the new things that are arriving. I will continue to add to the Bargain Basement, you’ll never know what you may find in there!
The Stash Builders Club is also a special for this month Subscribe in July for 12 months get one free. Pay upfront for 11 months only, 12th month free or pay as you go 6th and 12th months half price.
