3Flying geese units can be
found in quilts as stand alone units or as sections of larger blocks. For
wherever you want to use them this guide is sure to make their construction
simpler. The instructions will yield 4 geese units using 5 squares of fabric.
3A flying goose is
traditionally twice as wide as it is high. In order to use this guide you need
to have identified the desired finished size of your unit. For this exercise we
will work through to create a goose 2” x 4” finished size.
Side B Background
3Step one-
Cut
one square of goose fabric 5 ¼”
Cut
4 squares of background fabric 2⅞”
On
the reverse side of each of the background squares draw a line from corner to
corner on the diagonal.
Goose
side A
3Step two-
Referring to diagram 2 lay 2 of the background squares, right sides together, on the goose square. Using the lines as a guide, sew on each side of the ruled diagonal lines using a ¼” seam allowance.
3Step three-
Cut
along the ruled line and press open laying the seam flat on the background
fabric. Referring to diagram 3 pair another background fabric square with each of the sets you have
cut and right sides together. Using the lines as a guide, sew on each side of
the ruled diagonal lines using a ¼” seam allowance.
3Step four-
Cut along the ruled line and press open to yield 4 Flying geese units.
3To make geese units of a different size use the following formula:
Measurement of side A + 1 ¼” = size of goose square (4” + 1 ¼” = 5 ¼”) cut one per set.
Measurement of side B + ⅞” = size of background
square (2” + ⅞” = 2⅞”) cut four per set.
